Heartbreak cancer diagnosis

A CANCER diagnosis which has left the small community of Dimbulah in tatters has spurred a fundraising campaign that has raised around $10,000 in just three weeks.

Ten-year-old Rhyker Sanderson was recently diagnosed with B-ALL (B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) – a type of blood cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

A close friend of the Sanderson family launched a GoFundMe at the end of last month which has since raised $12,050 of its $14,000 goal.

Rhyker is currently undergoing chemotherapy in Brisbane, with the funds raised going towards treatment-related expenses, travel between Dimbulah and Brisbane, accommodation, food, fuel, parking, everyday living costs, and supporting Rhyker’s siblings throughout his treatment and recovery, as well as any other unexpected costs which may come up.

“His family have had to leave their home, their jobs, their community, and their normal lives behind as they face what no parent ever should – watching their child fight cancer,” fundraiser organiser Kirra Stevens wrote on the campaign webpage.

“Instead of simply being a kid, playing with his siblings and enjoying everyday life, Rhyker now faces hospital, treatment, and an incredibly long road ahead.

“His family are trying to process the worst news imaginable while also working out how they will manage life away from home for what could be a very long time.”

Ms Stevens said every donation, no matter how big or small, would help ease the financial pressure on Rhyker’s family while they focus on his wellbeing.

“Or if you can’t donate, please share this fundraiser. A simple share could reach someone who can help,” she said.

“From our little Dimbulah community to Brisbane – Rhyker, you have an army behind you. We are thinking of you, praying for you, cheering you on and sending you all the strength in the world.”
