Atherton claims third position
THE Atherton Cricket Club has jumped to third on the Cricket Far North ladder following a narrow two-run win over the Cassowary Coast Cyclones at the weekend.

The local club made the trek down to Innisfail on Saturday and posted a score of 138 runs. The game went right down to the wire as the Cyclones inched closer and closer to chasing down the score but ultimately fell just short at 136 runs.
Atherton went out to bat first and got off to a steady start, with opening batsmen Brandon Green and Reece Johnston posting scores of 12 and 19 respectively.
Brendan Nasser and Logan Poggioli put in good stints, with Nasser scoring 22 off 44 and Poggioli tallying up 20 off 20.
But it was Alex Nasser who top scored for his side this round with a handy 33 runs from 32 balls, including four 4s.
The local club finished their innings 10/138 after 37.5 overs.
Atherton started hot in the second innings, with bowlers Matthew Coleman and Riley Lennon claiming two early wickets to get the Cyclones’ opening batsmen out for four and 11 runs respectively.
But the next in line Tony Ura came out swinging and notched up a handy score of 61 off 52 balls, including four 4s and four 6s.
As the game went on the Cyclones were inching their way towards Atherton’s score, but after having two bottom-order batsmen dismissed with scores of one and two, it was anybody’s game.
Atherton managed to hold on, however, with Lennon claiming his second dismissal of the game to end the Cyclones’ hopes of a win by just three runs. Cyclones were all out for 136 after 34.3 overs.
This Saturday, Atherton will have a bye while the Mareeba Bandits return to take on Barron River Cricket Club at Borzi Park, Mareeba from 12.30pm.
